Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage.
The manner in which desert locust plagues develop is very complex. The two most important factors in that development are meteorology and the gregariousness of the insect.Since locusts breed most successfully in wet weather, rain in the semiarid regions inhabited by the desert locust provides ideal breeding conditions for a large increase in population. This increase must be repeated several times in neighboring breeding areas before enough locusts crowd together to form a swarm. As the supply of green, palatable food plants decreases to ward the end of the rainy season, the locusts become even more concentrated. They move on to other warm, damp, verdant places where they settle, feed, and reproduce. As this process is repeated a swarm eventually develops.Plagues are unpredictable and irregular because the meteorological patterns favorable to crowding are themselves irregular.

Part Ⅱ Reading Comprehension
Passage One
22.A 谜底谅解文第一段句首:to increase their status,financial position,and sense of self-worth 与 who want very much to have a self-improvement意旨沟通。
23.D 原文“…foreign visitors have observed that Americans spend an excessive amount of time working…”
Passage Two
The winners were greatly honored by having olive wreaths placed on their heads. The participants competed every four years……,C, 文中第一段末尾处有顺利证实……war in progress were stopped to allow the games to take place。D. The winners, were greatly honored by ...having poems sung about their deeds.
In 776 BC,the first Olympic games were he
ld...to honor the Greeks’ chief god,Zeus.
Therefore,contests in running,jumping,discus and javeli
on throwing, boxing, and horse and chariot racing were held...,不错看出在本题四项
skating(溜冰)未被包括在内。
The Greeks emphasized physical fitness and streng
th in their education of youth
:The Greeks attached so much importance to these games that they calculated tim
e in four-year cycles “Olympaids” dating 776 BC
Passage Three
临了点明它的益处在于使过问者“return to the age of technol
ogy with the courage and independence of Natty Bumppo, who did indeed belong to t
he age of the frontier.”
Except for the Indians, the earliest backpackers in Ameri
ca were frontiersmen…
33.D 谅解文开始……the earliest backpackers……,who roamed the wilderness looking either for necessities such as food and water or for sources of wealth such as fur and god…… A. For them (early backpackers) backpacking was...a means of achieving what one day would be called“the American Dream”精明文顶用的当年异日时态,也即是说“American Dream” 这个办法早期的 backpackers 还莫得,是在他们以后的东说念主发明的。 For them (ealy backpackers) backpacking was a way of survival Today, however, many people enjoy backpacking as a recreational activity,这证实,把背看背包漫游看成一种文娱行径是当代东说念主的事。C.
a pack and leaving behind the world of telephone, television and traffic promise an exciting experience.Testing one’s stamina and skill is challenging a sense of one’s place in the natural world can be rewarding 因此A.
Their outing will enable them to return in a short time to the age of technology with the courage and independence of Natty Bumppo, who did indeed belong to the age of frontier. A.
Passage Four

Part Ⅴ Writing
Changes in the Ways People Spent Their Holidays
The ways people spent their holidays have changed greatly. In 1990,40% of people spent their holidays at home, the figure dropping to 9% in 1995. It seemed that people were becoming more and more mobile, and they wanted to explore entertainment in the outside world.
The seaside still had its attraction to people. The rate dropped slightly from 38% in 1990 to 31% in 1995.But there might be a further decrease in the future because of the pollution.
The table shows that a great number of people spent their holidays travelling abroad. The rate in 1995 doubled as compared with 1990.With the increase of income, more and more people could afford and would go abroad to spend their holidays.
The table also shows another tendency:the rate of camping was rising from 10% in
1990 to 36% in 1995. The reason may be that the real beauty of nature is being
rediscovered伊人成人,and people are getting more and more eager to return to nature.
